Breath of Fresh Air

It seems like last winter was really cold. And snowy. And miserable. Am I right?
I haven't forgotten my hate for winter. Which makes me appreciate the warmth of summer. And that appreciation takes me on hikes with my brother Benj.
And on hikes it's normal to pose like this with ginormous dandelions.
And then dreamily (attempt to) blow said dandelion in a picturesque manner.
I've been on a hiking kick ever since we did a hike for a mutual activity at the beginning of summer. It's such a great workout, and I love forests, and it's a good way to get a little bit of an escape from the rush of everyday life.
So I forced my brother to accompany me on a hiking adventure to Elephant Rock in Bountiful. Or should I say Beautiful?
It was so pretty! I tried to get us to turn around a couple times before finally arriving to this beautiful view, but Ben had us push on and I'm glad he did. It was so pretty and rewarding to make it to the lookout point. Nevermind that the actual rock landmark thing wasn't much to look at, the rest of it was pretty spectacular.
And then Ben 'bout gave me a heart attack when he decided to venture down to the landmark for a photo opportunity.
Who knew I was a hiker? Other than being terrified of the lurking cougars, bears, skunks and snakes that I'm always convinced are rustling in the bushes, I think this could be a good new hobby for me.

A few days after my strenuous hike with Ben, Jeff and I took the boys on a flat-landed hike (fine it was a walk) to the pond to feed the ducks.
This thing happened where we bought a ton of hot dog buns a long time ago for some unknown reason and upon realizing we never use hot dog buns, we have now repurposed them into duck food. And Eli food?

I'm pretty sure Carson's favorite animal is a duck. If you ask him, every animal says, "Quack, quack." And let's just say that The Bachelorette showed a picture of a pond during a really dramatic part of the finale and I was watching with my kids and I couldn't hear anything because Carson was quacking at the pond in giddy excitement. The kid adores ducks.

More outside enjoyment. I love to ride around with Carson on the old PlasmaCar. He probably prefers it to himself, but he'll share with me sometimes.
My favorite thing to do on Sunday evenings is just to be in our backyard together playing. This was such an occasion.
Frisbee Golf and picnic dinner at the park.

Eli has become good friends with a boy in our ward. One night I told him he was going to go over to this boy's house to play the next day and he was so excited. The next morning I was woken up to Eli jumping up and down in my room saying, "Mom! Get up! We have to hurry! I'm going to be late to play with my best friend!"

After that playdate, when I was trying to pry him away from his best friend's house to walk home with me, this meltdown happened. There was no getting him to budge. We go through the grieving process after every playdate.
We go to the park a lot. Carson's favorite thing to do at the park is to push the gigantic double stroller around. It always cracks me up to see such a little person pushing such a big stroller.
And this is one of my absolute favorite things. Whenever I walk past a fence on our walks, both boys stick their hands out like this. It's so cute and makes me smile every time.
Happy summer!

Fashionista Part 2

As many of you may recall, I am a self-proclaimed fashionista.
Part of being a fashionista is being a natural in front of the camera.
It was about a year ago that I bought 5 yards of fabric for new curtains in our kitchen. Then I ended up not using the fabric in the kitchen. And it collected dust for a year. Until I thought, "Hey. Why don't I whip myself up a long skirt with all this cute, unused fabric I have lying around?" And so I did.
I introduce you to my amazon-woman-past-the-knee-toddler-friendly-perfectly-long-enough skirt with a crooked hemline. Don't worry. I fixed that up after wearing it to church.
Did you notice the ties there in the front? I was pretty impressed those turned out seamlessly.
"Oh. You like my skirt? Why thank you. I made it myself. I'm sure the uneven hem didn't give it away. What's that? You think I should try out for Project Runway? Okay."
This one's easily the best picture from the photo shoot.
After making one skirt without too much sweat off my back, I noticed more skirt-sized scraps of fabric in my stash. Another skirt was born. Which naturally required a series of late-night mirrored selfies.
This one. Has a zipper. A ZIPPER! I've outdone myself.
I have an addiction folks. No. Not the modeling. I'm not addicted to the modeling. But I am a fan of picking through fabric scraps to create skirts that are FINALLY comfortably, cutely long enough.

Summer Days

Welcome to another special edition of: A Series of Unrelated Pictures from My Phone! First up, Eli and Carson being crazy monkeys one Sunday morning:
We just discovered this awesome store right by our house that has super cute cars attached to the shopping cart and free Smarties at the end of every trip. My kids sob when it's time to leave.
Instagrepeat. As I said there, "I think I gave birth to a leprechaun."
A cute picture that fell between the cracks and didn't ever make it onto my 4th of July post.
Black Bean Soup. A family favorite. Doubles as finger paint when you're full.
Carson loves to sit in my closet and watch me get ready in the mornings.
On a walk to feed the ducks! I love this place.

Carson naturally thought we were trying to feed him when we handed him pieces of bread. When he realized the bread was actually for the ducks, he pulled the bread out of his mouth to share with his new feathered friends.
Eli at the park. His new favorite thing is to make me sand pancakes/waffles/cookies. It's darling.

An arty afternoon.
One time they played nicely together with cars. Eli has a very hard time seeing Carson play with any of his cars, but this day he was alright with it. And they were precious together.
Eli loves pushing Carson around. In the umbrella stroller.
Beating the heat means lots of evenings of hosed down kids.

Carson has completely taken possession of Eli's PlasmaCar. He's getting pretty quick!
Eli prefers his trusty trike.
 :)
Baby blue eyes! Does anyone else think it looks like Carson is stuck in the cement?
We're having a fun time in this warm weather. Summer, stay forever.

The Nature Cure

Lately there’s a common theme,
Running through our house.
Make a little brother scream,
Giggle at the rouse.

Smack a brother in the head,
Bite each other's feet.
Fight each night to go to bed,
Run straight for the street.
Kicking walls and splatting food,
Two boys finding trouble.
Puts mom in a fiesty mood,
Making her blood bubble.

Approaching insanity,
Mom has had enough!
Gotta get out of this city,
Go explore the rough!
Cramped up in the house all day,
It’s starting to show.
Follow me kids, right this way.
On a hike we go!
We step in the wilderness,
Freedom fills our veins.
Shocked by their obedience,
Wandering terrain.
Single file line uphill,
Eli takes the lead.
Carson hikes with his strong will,
Happy to proceed.
With boys in their element,
I see this is good.
No more brotherly torment,
Just dirt, rocks and wood.
A smile crept onto my face.
Everyone was happy.
The boys willingly embraced --
Not to get too sappy.

If your kids are getting wild,
And if your kids are boys,
They might be a bit more mild,
If you remove the toys.
And wander in the forest,
Wherever it may be.
For a little family quest,
And some serenity.
